Several aspects that affect the service life of universal joint bearings

Under certain special operating conditions, universal joint bearings can achieve a longer lifespan than traditional calculations, especially under light loads. These special operating conditions are when the rolling surface (track and rolling parts) is effectively separated and limited by a lubricating oil film, which may cause surface damage caused by pollutants. In fact, under ideal conditions, the so-called permanent bearing life is possible.

(1) Poor lubrication

The lubricating oil (or grease) used in universal joint bearings has a certain operating temperature. When the temperature is too high, it will deteriorate and lose its lubrication effect, causing the bearings to burn out due to high temperature. In addition, poor quality of lubricating oil (or grease) itself or untimely addition of grease during operation can also cause an increase in bearing temperature or produce abnormal sounds.

(2) Unbalanced rotor

Generally speaking, the rotor of the operating equipment needs to undergo dynamic and static balancing before assembly, so the universal joint bearing will not have any problems. However, some rotors may experience unbalanced centrifugal force during operation due to corrosion from the medium, wear from solid impurities, or bending of the shaft, resulting in bearing heating, vibration, and severe wear of the raceway, ultimately leading to damage.

(3) Delayed inspection and replacement

During the operation of the universal joint bearing, regular inspections should be carried out according to regulations. If there is heating, abnormal noise, vibration, etc., the vehicle should be stopped in a timely manner to find the cause and eliminate the fault. If serious fatigue peeling, oxidation rust, worn pits, cracks, hardness drops to HRC<60, or there is excessive noise that cannot be adjusted, the bearing should be replaced in a timely manner. If the inspection and replacement are not timely, it will cause serious damage to the bearings and even the rotor, thereby affecting normal production. In addition, improper disassembly of bearings and loosening of equipment anchor bolts can cause vibration, which can also result in pressure marks on the bearing raceway and rolling element, as well as cracking of the inner and outer race of the bearing.
